People everywhere in the world speak English. It is the most spoken language in the world. Around 400 million people speak English as a first language. Around 1.1 billion people speak English as a second language. English is the main language in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Other countries with English as one of the main languages include Barbados, Jamaica, Ghana, Nigeria, and Singapore. People in these countries also use English at school and at work: India, Philippines, Pakistan, Israel and Malta. English has many different dialects
and accents, but people usually understand each other. English is quite easy to learn for speakers of many languages, especially people who speak a Germanic language. Examples of Germanic languages are Dutch, German, Danish and Afrikaans. English uses the Latin alphabet, which has twenty-six (26) letters. English uses many words from other languages like croissant, kindergarten, ninja, tofu, and sofa. But other languages also use English words like "selfie" and "weekend". Sometimes spelling in English is difficult: see/sea, hear/here, their/there. And sometimes pronunciation is not so easy: know, hour, climb.
